Wearing Thrifted Pieces To Keep A Simple Closet

Thrifting closet staples that are comfy and sustainable.

I’ve always been drawn to natural fabrics. There’s just something about the way they drape and move—comfortable, breathable, and easy to live in. Even better, most of the pieces in my closet come from the thrift store. Not only does that make my wardrobe more affordable, but it also makes the hunt a little more fun.

I’m turning 53 on Friday, and lately I’ve been reflecting on life and how things are unfolding. Overall, I truly can’t complain. Life has been good to me. But as the years go by, I’ve noticed I’m becoming more intentional about the things I want to hold onto—especially the little parts of daily life that bring me joy.

One of those things is building a closet that feels like me. Not a huge closet, not overflowing racks of clothes—just a thoughtful collection of pieces that reflect my personality and the life I actually live.

I’ve never been a neutral girlie. Give me color, patterns, and interesting textures any day. At the same time, I’ve learned that I prefer a smaller wardrobe. Too many clothes start to feel overwhelming, and realistically, I know I won’t wear everything. Instead, I keep a handful of reliable staples—pants, tops, and shoes that work for everyday life.

For trendier pieces, I’m happy if they last a season or two. That’s another reason thrifting works so well for me. I can find beautiful natural fabrics, unique pieces you don’t see everywhere, and items with a little character. I wear them, enjoy them, and when I’m ready to move on, I donate them so someone else can give them a new life.

My lifestyle definitely influences what I wear. I’m an active person and happiest when I’m outdoors—camping, hiking, exploring, or just wandering somewhere new. My style leans toward what I’d call comfy with a bit of personality. Think bohemian, granola, salty granola, desert chic, and a little touch of that relaxed RL aesthetic.

Dennis and I love what we call our “micro-adventures.” On weekends when we don’t have a longer 2–3 day trip planned, we still find ways to get out and explore. Since we live in the desert, we’re lucky to have so many beautiful places nearby. Sometimes we head to the lake, other times to the mountains. Most weekends include a mix of camping, hiking, fishing, or simply enjoying the quiet outdoors.

So far this year we’ve already gone camping twice, and our third trip is right around the corner. There’s also been plenty of fishing, hiking, a little off-roading, and some slower days spent right at home.

Lately, Dennis and I have been working on creating a peaceful little garden in our backyard. It’s still a work in progress, but we’re hoping to have it finished by early spring. It’s turning into one of those spaces where you can sit quietly, sip your coffee, and just breathe.

Life feels pretty full these days—in the best way.

I’m curious… what do you do to relax and recharge? I’d love to hear from you, so feel free to leave a comment.

Until the next blog.
